Last night (Oct. 3), the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. (USMX) announced they reached a tentative agreement on wages for the new contract. The two parties have agreed to extend the Master Contract, the contract that had expired on Monday, until January 15, 2025, to return to the bargaining table and negotiate the other outstanding issues, automation being one of them. Therefore, the ILA have agreed to return to work this morning and reopen the ports.
The ILA and USMX will work to reach a new contract before the January expiration date. Once an agreement is made, the agreement will still have to be ratified by the rank-and-file members. NAW will continue to monitor the situation and keep members updated on any developments.
