Inside Washington
Through political will, or simple exhaustion, the House of Representatives has found a governing middle. In a demonstration that tone and tenor really do matter and can impact a politician's ability to lead, Mike Johnson (R-LA) overwhelmingly survived a motion to vacate the speakership brought to the floor by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA). In a first of its kind bipartisan display the House voted 359 to 43 to table the motion. Speaker Johnson is a policy centric leader, more comfortable talking about the details of legislation and the potential impact on the economy than discussing elections and red vs. blue. All signs indicate Johnson will remain Speaker through the end of this Congress, which should give him greater freedom at the negotiating table with the Democratic controlled Senate and President Biden.
