It is official! The 119th Congress convened on January 3, and despite a brief hiccup it went smoothly with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) winning on the first ballot and Senator John Thune (R-SD) taking the reins as Senate Majority Leader. Then on January 6, Donald J. Trump’s election as President was officially certified. The smooth transition of power is remarkably different from two and four years ago, and hopefully a positive sign that D.C. is ready to get down to work. Your NAW team, including CEO Eric Hoplin, have already been walking the halls of Congress meeting the newly elected and some of our longtime champions, and the mood seems positive and productive with people interested to talk to business leaders and roll up their sleeves to work. Taxes and tariffs are top-of-mind in most conversations, with people wanting to do something on extending the current tax code and trying to figure out what is going to happen on tariffs.

President Trump’s inauguration is on January 20, and D.C. is buzzing with balls, parades, and the pomp and circumstance that politicians love. But behind the scenes Congress is already at work. Single party control allows things to move much quicker than a divided Congress and we are seeing that manifest. Trump nominated his cabinet quickly, and this week the Senate is holding over a dozen confirmation hearings, with more scheduled next week. NAW is particularly watching the hearings for Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor, who has taken some controversial pro-union positions in the past. We are also watching the cabinet and subcabinet picks who will be implementing the many and sometime conflicting promises made on the campaign trail, especially as it impacts taxes, tariffs, and workforce policy.
