As regular legislative sessions wind down across the country, the work for state lawmakers is far from over. For example, Colorado and Texas are each poised for high-profile special sessions in the coming months, signaling that pivotal policy decisions still lie ahead.

In Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis (D) is expected to convene a special session in August – though no official announcement has been made. The session may center on concerns over looming federal funding reductions and the state’s landmark artificial intelligence (AI) law. Passed in 2024 as part of Colorado’s anti-discrimination statute, the comprehensive AI legislation could be delayed or replaced altogether, prompting fresh debate among lawmakers.
