Voters across Virginia, New Jersey and New York City resoundingly backed Democratic candidates over their GOP opponents, reflecting a dissatisfaction with federal policies being pursued by lawmakers in Washington, D.C. Democrats now hold trifectas in both Virginia and New Jersey, with control of the governorship and majorities in both chambers of each state legislature.
Democrats swept every major statewide contest in the Old Dominion State and the Garden State. While many of the night’s contests were shaped by local issues, including cost of living, abortion access, data center growth and school investment, Democrats successfully nationalized the elections by tying Republican candidates to the ongoing federal shutdown, immigration crackdowns and economic dislocation. According to CNN exit polling, a majority of voters in Virginia and New Jersey said their votes were meant to send a message to President Trump, and over 90% of those voters chose Democrats. That sentiment translated into a broad-based coalition: Democrats not only swept suburban and urban precincts, but also reclaimed heavily Latino counties in New Jersey and flipped key swing districts in Virginia’s exurbs and coastal communities.
