On November 5, U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced federal legislation that would require companies to publicly report artificial intelligence (AI)-related job losses and worker displacement. This bill reflects a growing trend that started at the state level where legislators are raising concerns about potential impact of technology-related job displacements.
Sen. Hawley’s federal legislation mandates companies submit quarterly reports to the U.S. Department of Labor and provide a corresponding report to Congress. In announcing the bill, Sen. Hawley said, “The American people need to have an accurate understanding of how AI is affecting our workforce, so we can ensure that AI works for the people, not the other way around.” Co-sponsor Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) added, “This bipartisan legislation will finally give us a clear picture of AI’s impact on the workforce—what jobs are being eliminated, which workers are being retrained, and where new opportunities are emerging.”
