Heading into Memorial Day we (and you) get to take a bit of a victory lap. After years of lobbying and despite strong headwinds, internal divisions, and threats of failure, the House of Representatives voted to advance the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and in doing so extend and expand on the 2017 tax provisions set to expire at the end of the year. While the media reports on the overnight committee meetings, last minute lobbying by the Speaker and the President, and 42-page managers amendment making last minute changes, this was in no way an overnight deal. NAW has been working toward the extension of business provisions like 199A, the death tax, business and R&D expensing and others for years, hosting hundreds of meetings in that time and educating (and reeducating) members of Congress and staff on the vital role our industry has in our nation’s economy, and the importance of extending and making permanent the tax treatment of pass-through businesses. Alex Hendrie gives us more details below and we think there is much to celebrate. However, we are still far from the finish line, as we shift focus to the Senate where we do expect changes, and must again press our priorities. This is just the halfway point toward making law, but it’s further than many thought we would be on Memorial Day.
