This week the U.S. Senate finally took a breather, with both chambers of Congress heading home for a one-week recess. For Republicans this has been a successful first 10 weeks. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) managed to get all 22 Cabinet posts through the Senate with the singular hiccup of Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from the Attorney General consideration. Republicans were also able to pass legislation to fund government through the end of this fiscal year, a goal that seemed unattainable just two weeks ago. Both Speaker Johnson (R-LA) and Leader Thune have exceeded many pundits’ expectations so far but their powers will continue to be tested. When Congress returns the debate over the size, shape and scope of tax reform will take center stage when the two leaders come together to negotiate the budget reconciliation instructions, an area where the House and Senate are currently leagues apart.

At the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, President Trump continues to put the pedal to the metal and press forward on his use of tariffs to reshape the global economy. His intent is real, and he seems willing to shake off recent stock market losses and hits to his approval rating. This insertion of uncertainty to the supply chain is being felt by distributors across the spectrum, and we are advocating for clarity and metrics as new tariffs start to roll out. More helpful have been the drumbeat of deregulatory actions to repeal Biden era orders and burdensome regulations.
