With the 2026 general election rapidly approaching, attention is already turning to one of the most consequential sets of state-level contests in recent history. Voters in 36 states will elect governors in 2026, including high-profile open-seat races in Michigan, Georgia, Colorado, Ohio and Kansas, as well as pivotal reelection battles in Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
The field is already beginning to take shape: general election matchups are now set in 19 states (Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas), while Republican primaries in Oklahoma and South Dakota have advanced to runoffs and primaries in 15 additional states will take place between July 21 and September 8.
