Sales fell 2.2% YoY, improving from 2Q's 8.8% decline, but gross margin compressed further and adjusted EBITDA dropped 28.3%, leading to a narrowed 2026 outlook.
Building materials distributor Builders FirstSource reported third-quarter net sales of $3.85 billion, down 2.2% year-over-year, as continued housing market weakness weighed on profitability despite improving sales trends.
The decline moderated from the company’s 8.8% sales decrease in 2Q26 and 10.1% drop in 1Q26.

Core organic sales decreased 3.9%, while commodity deflation reduced sales by 0.1%. Acquisitions contributed 1.8 percentage points of growth.
Gross profit fell 10.6% to $1.07 billion, with gross margin contracting 260 basis points to 27.8%. Adjusted EBITDA declined 28.3% to $311 million, while adjusted EBITDA margin narrowed 290 basis points to 8.1%.
Net income decreased to $60.4 million from $122.4 million a year earlier. Free cash flow plunged 83.7% to $76 million.

Core organic sales trends improved across Builders FirstSource’s three major end markets, although single-family construction remained a significant drag:
Value-added core organic sales declined 6%, including a 4% decrease in manufactured products and an 8% decline in windows, doors and millwork. Specialty building products and services fell 5%, while lumber and sheet goods increased 2%.
Value-added products represented approximately 46% of quarterly sales.
Builders FirstSource narrowed its 2026 sales guidance to $14.2 billion-$14.6 billion from $14 billion-$14.8 billion, maintaining the midpoint.
The company also narrowed its adjusted EBITDA outlook to $1.075 billion-$1.125 billion from $1 billion-$1.2 billion, while reducing the upper end of its free cash flow forecast to $450 million from $500 million.
Management continues to expect single-family housing starts in its markets to decline approximately 7% this year.
The company generated $23 million in productivity savings during 3Q and $57 million year-to-date. It remains on track to implement approximately $115 million in cost actions during 2026, representing $140 million in annualized savings.
Builders FirstSource also invested approximately $91 million in two acquisitions during the quarter.
Builders FirstSource’s improving sales trajectory suggests housing-related demand declines may be moderating, particularly in multifamily construction. However, continued margin compression and sharply lower cash flow show that stabilizing revenue alone doesn’t restore profitability. The distributor’s gross margin has contracted 500 basis points since 3Q24, underscoring the cumulative impact of weaker demand and pricing pressure. For building materials distributors, the takeaway remains disciplined cost management, careful capacity planning and investment in differentiated services. With housing starts still depressed, a meaningful recovery in operating leverage may take longer than a sales rebound.
