On Oct. 21, electrical supplies distributor Sonepar announced plans to invest $560 million to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence across its global operations.

President and CEO Philippe Delpech unveiled the investment during Sonepar’s Strategic Supplier Summit in Paris, which brought together 300 executives and other participants from the global electrical industry.

The Paris-based company said the investment would help “industrialize” AI globally, supporting commercial performance, operational efficiency and customers’ energy transition needs. The announcement did not specify a spending timeline.

“With these $560 million future investments, we are taking a new step forward in making AI a performance driver that benefits our customers, suppliers, and associates alike,” Delpech said.

Sonepar identified applications spanning demand forecasting and inventory optimization, personalized product recommendations and automation of administrative and sales tasks, including quotation generation. The company said those capabilities would improve product availability and allow salespeople to devote more time to advisory services and customer relationships. AI also supports product carbon footprint calculations.

The announcement built on nearly $4 billion Sonepar said it had committed to transforming its business since 2021. That included nearly $3 billion for global supply chain modernization and automation, plus $1 billion for digital transformation, including its Spark omnichannel platform.

Building on a Global Data Foundation

The investment followed Sonepar’s Sept. 24 announcement of a global Data & AI platform, developed with technology consulting firm Onepoint. At that time, the company said predictive models supported by the platform had reached operations representing 95% of its revenue. The platform established a common foundation for analyzing sales, customer histories and logistics flows across subsidiaries.

Sonepar reported record 2025 sales of $37.9 billion, including $13.9 billion in online sales. The company also reported operating 37 automated distribution centers globally.

The family-owned distributor operates in 40 countries with approximately 46,000 employees. Its U.S. network includes more than 571 locations and 12,700 employees.

MDM Analysis

Sonepar’s commitment signals that its next competitive push will center on turning shared data and automated infrastructure into consistent execution across its businesses. Over the next 12-24 months, watch for evidence of faster quotations, stronger product availability and greater sales capacity — outcomes that could raise customer expectations throughout electrical distribution. For other distributors, the practical takeaway is to connect AI spending to specific operating measures and build the data foundation needed to repeat successful applications across branches.
