P. Cody Phipps


Cody Phipps is President and CEO of United Stationers, a Fortune 500 wholesaler-distributor of business products with 2012 sales of over $5 billion. Cody oversees the sales and distribution of approximately 100,000 items from over 1,000 manufacturers. This includes a broad selection of technology products, office products, office furniture, janitorial and breakroom supplies, and industrial products that are delivered to over 25,000 resellers. Since August 2003 when Mr. Phipps joined United Stationers as Senior Vice President of Operations, he has been promoted to President, United Stationers Supply in 2006, and President and Chief Operating Officer of United Stationers in 2010. Mr. Phipps was responsible for streamlining operations, inventory, and transportation to create value for customers and suppliers throughout the U.S. and Mexico. In addition, under Mr. Phipps guidance the company’s “Winning From the Middle” strategy has positioned United Stationers as the leading partner to both suppliers and resellers allowing all three to be profitable and building loyalty among the partnership. Among Mr. Phipps leading accomplishments is his dedication to building a high performance company with a purpose. As part of the company’s devotion to this higher ambition, its associates, are enabled and encouraged to participate in philanthropic work. With more than 40 associate-driven Foundation councils across the company United Stationers’ Charitable Foundation engages employees and business partners to give to the charitable cause dearest to them. Prior to joining United Stationers, Mr. Phipps was a Partner at McKinsey & Company in Chicago. During his tenure at McKinsey, he was a leader in the firm’s global operations effectiveness practice and co-founded and led the Service Strategy and Operations Practice, which focused on driving significant operational improvement in complex service and logistics environments. Mr. Phipps holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Operations from The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio
