Benco is the largest privately held dental merchandise, equipment and service provider in the United States. Benco is run by brothers Chuck Cohen and Rick Cohen (Managing Partners) and father Larry Cohen who is the company’s part-time (semi-retired) Chairman. The company was founded by Benjamin Cohen (Larry’s father). Benco celebrated its 80th anniversary during 2010. During the past 10 years, Benco has more than tripled sales and currently employs over 1,200 associates nationwide. 7 out of the past 8 years, Benco was selected as one of the top 50 large “Best Places to Work” companies in PA. Lou is currently VP Operations for Benco Dental Company in Pittston, PA and has the responsibility for multiple call center teams, warehousing, equipment logistics, inventory control and the repairs department teams. Over the past 11 years, Lou was responsible for opening distribution centers in Jacksonville FL, Fort Wayne IN, Dallas TX, a new Headquarters facility in Pittston PA in 2010 and most recently, a distribution center in Reno NV in June of 2011. Lou began his career at Benco in 2000 as Director of Operations whose first task was co-leading the successful implementation of a new operating system. Lou is also involved with Benco’s BCI (Benco Continuous Improvement) program with a BCI champion assigned to his Ops team - he is a big supporter of this program. Currently, he is co-leading a cross-functional team in implementing a formal S&OP process at Benco. Prior to joining Benco, Lou was the Director of Distribution for Aventis-Pasteur, a division of Sanofi-Aventis – the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines (formerly Connaught Laboratories) in Swiftwater PA and worked for that organization for 13 years. During his career, Lou developed a nationwide distribution system and was heavily involved with process improvements, Quality programs and developing temperature controlled packaging for the safe shipping of vaccines to both domestic and international customers. Lou was also a division leader for the implementation of a new MRP system in 1999. Prior to Aventis, Lou worked in the logistics area for a veterinary drug and device manufacturer/distributor. Lou is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Health and Personal Care Distribution Conference, a member of WERC, CSCMP and earned his BS degree from King’s College. Lou and his wife Diane currently reside in Plains PA and are life-long residents of the Wilkes-Barre PA area.
