Organization & Job Summary

The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), the Washington, DC-based trade association representing the 30,000 company, $6 trillion revenue distribution industry, is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and collaborative Vice President of Communications to join the team.

The Vice President of Communications will play a key role at NAW, reporting directly to the CEO. The VP will lead several important functions, working across the organization as well as support many functions led by others within NAW.  Below is an outline of many of the duties the VP will be asked to perform.  NAW is a nimble and flexible organization, so these responsibilities may be adjusted as different priorities and needs arise.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Leading Areas of Responsibility

  • Communication: Working across the organization, develop and oversee a public communications strategy for NAW, to include developing strong relationships with the DC political press corp.
  • NAW Brand: Develop an NAW brand strategy, aimed at positioning NAW as a forward-looking organization representing a vital American industry. Oversee implementation of the strategy.
  • Industry Brand: Develop an industry brand strategy, aimed at raising the profile of the Wholesale Distribution industry, helping political leaders understand the importance of the industry to the American economy. Oversee implementation of the strategy.
  • Corporate Responsibility: Manage relationships with key philanthropic partnerships.

Supporting Areas of Responsibility

  • Advocacy: Support the priorities of the government relations team, working closely with them to enhance their direct lobbying and coalition efforts by leveraging digital media campaigns, third-parties/influencers, research, events, select sponsorships and all elements of the core communication function (press releases, pitching stories, etc).
  • Marketing: Coordinate an enterprise approach among each NAW function to enhance the effectiveness of the marketing we direct toward our members and to external stakeholders.
  • Events: For major NAW member events, lead the branding and messaging elements. Related to advocacy and industry brand, design and execute events in DC and other key locations designed to advance our advocacy mission or enhance our industry brand efforts.
  • NAW Strategy: As a member of the senior team, serve as a strategic advisor across all NAW functions in the areas of communication, marketing, brand, and public affairs.

Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to successfully perform the job as well as the education and experience requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Developing and communicating persuasive messages working closely with other members of the Communications team
  • Generating interest and engaging with the media to create favorable press stories at the national, regional and trade levels
  • Developing press opportunities for the NAW CEO and other senior staff members that will increase and amplify the NAW brand and name
  • Driving public affairs/advocacy campaigns
  • Leveraging digital platforms in a sustained way to communicate with key stakeholders and expand NAW’s digital footprint
  • Managing a public affairs budget
  • Ability to translate complex topics and issues into compelling messaging
  • Strong knowledge of the media landscape and political savviness
  • Strong presentation skills

Education and Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent education/work experience, required
  • 8-10 years of experience in politics, government, or trade association, required
  • Successful candidates will have served in roles similar to press secretaries, communications directors, or public affairs specialists

Work Environment:  The position is located at our headquarters in Washington, D.C., near Metro Center. Currently, we are operating a hybrid work model, where employees are in the office Tuesday-Thursday, which is a standard office environment and are given an option to work remotely most Mondays and Fridays.
