Organization & Job Summary

The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), the Washington, DC-based trade association representing the 30,000 company, $7 trillion revenue distribution industry, is seeking a leader to help the distribution industry: 1) navigate the forces of change in the economy, 2) envision the future of the industry and position NAW members to boldly charge toward it, and 3) Design and oversee implementation of a portfolio of programs to help NAW members improve their businesses.

Essential Job Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, each essential job responsibility must be performed satisfactorily.  Other responsibilities may be requested to meet business needs.

  • Oversee NAW’s Innovation and Member Programs Department and the Institute for Distribution Excellence, including management of a growing team of FTEs, consultants, vendors, fellows, and strategic partners.
  • Maintain frequent interaction with leading CEOs and C-suite executives of large corporations and businesses. Engage with members to understand their priorities with the aim of setting the agenda for the entire suite of NAW programs, including events, research, publications, working groups, and more.
  • Build relationships with thought leaders, consultants, academics, business leaders, etc. to fuel our agenda with the latest ideas, frameworks, research, and to create a steady stream of dynamic speakers to engage our members across our portfolio of meetings and events.
  • Collaborate with the other members of NAW’s leadership team to help build the next-generation NAW.

Requirements: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed to successfully perform the job as well as the education and experience requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of business, including issues related to technology, disruption, innovation, leadership, management, operations, workforce, etc.
  • Excellent member service skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Ability to pro-actively manage and develop direct reports and teams
  • Ability to inspire and motivate constituents
  • Ability to be diplomatic, resourceful, and persuasive; effective negotiation skills
  • Ability to design strategies and create new programs and processes to support them

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and work experience, required
  • 10+ years of experience working in the wholesale distribution industry and/or association member engagement and programming.

Other Experience and Requirements:

  • Experience interacting with corporate C-Suite executives on a frequent basis, required
  • Experience in developing big ideas, curating the best, and building programing around them to engage business leaders, desirable
  • Experience with the wholesale distribution industry, desirable
  • Experience with associations, desirable
  • A working knowledge of WordPress, Pardot, Salesforce, desirable

Work Environment:  The position is located at our headquarters in Washington, D.C., near Metro Center. Currently, we are operating a hybrid work model, where employees are in the office Tuesday-Thursday, which is a standard office environment and are given an option to work remotely most Mondays and Fridays. Fully remote work with regular travel to DC will be considered for exceptional candidates.
