DOL Releases COBRA FAQs For Expanded Eligibility Continuation Coverage

The Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration has announced the availability of 10 frequently asked questions regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that expanded eligibility for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) continuation coverage and provided a premium reduction to certain qualified individuals.

The FAQ’s address the requirements for qualifying for the COBRA premium reduction. They also state that the premium reduction provisions only apply to premiums for coverage periods beginning on or after February 17, 2009, and can last for up to nine months. The FAQs identify the assistance available from the Department if a former employer’s group health plans denies an application for a premium reduction.
