“The NAW Billion Dollar CIO Roundtable is an excellent forum for like-minded executives to network and exchange ideas. Time invested attending these Roundtables are time well spent.”

Amin Noormohamed, VP & Chief Information Officer, Core Mark International Inc

The NAW Billion Dollar Company Chief Information Officer Roundtable for direct members was created as a new mechanism for the CIO’s of large distribution enterprises to network with non-competing peers in multiple lines of trade on key IT issues.

Similar to other billion dollar roundtables NAW has created for the CLO, CFO, Operations, and Human Resource executive, this by invitation only roundtable is composed of executives from billion dollar companies that meet in Chicago two times per year. This highly interactive group consists of the SENIOR-MOST IT executives. The annual fee is $1,800 per member, which covers meeting costs for two events in a twelve month cycle. Participants are expected to cover the cost of their hotel and travel. Once the annual fee is paid, there are no additional fees to attend the meetings, which will last one day beginning with a reception and dinner the evening before.

The participating companies can also name an alternate who can take the place of the enrolled Executive, should that person be unable to attend the scheduled meeting.

If you would like to learn more please contact John Peter, Tamela Blalock or Adam Isenberg at 202.872.0885.

Eligibility: Companies with $1B+ in annual revenue.
The NAW Billion Dollar Roundtable is the only opportunity that provides networking and benchmarking exclusively with other top executives of non competing, like-sized Wholesale-Distribution companies.

“Architecture for IoT”

Jack Cox

Fellow at CapTech Consulting

Vinnie Schoenfelder

Chief Technology Officer at CapTech Consulting

The Internet of Things is an exciting arena where practices are poorly defined but move quickly. We’ve seen companies rush to build an IoT system and forget good architectural principles, which may lead to having a broken system that talks to hundreds of devices with no user interface. This talk takes us back to these good architectural principles, like security, deployability, manageability, maintainability, and flexibility, as they relate to IoT deployments. These principles become even more important when dealing with large-scale device deployments.

Takeaway(s)

  • Strategies for deploying, managing, and extracting value from IoT systems based on sensors and RFID.
  • How to think about classical architectural principles in regards to cutting-edge IoT and smart sensor based systems.
  • New hidden pitfalls to avoid in IoT centric systems.

Presentation & Discussion

“A Billion Dollar Distributor’s Place in the Digital Space”

The transition to digital has been uneven across the B2B industry – with some distributors seeing rapid success in managing the transition (seeing as much as 60% of their business now coming through online channels) and many others struggling to develop a presence online. As a result of this inversion point, new entrants are entering the market with deep experience in B2C ecommerce (e.g. Amazon) and seeing rapid success that is surprising traditional distributors.

In our discussion, we’ll present why the current B2B leaders found success, and highlight blockers that slow (or even stop) ecommerce efforts of traditional distributors. In addition, we will point out key factors that explain why disruptors like Amazon are finding success in B2B so quickly. To close, we will share insights into the “Amazon Experience” specifically and highlight areas where Amazon is strong and weak at B2B product discovery, and discuss how competitors can respond.

Takeaway(s)

  • Attendees will understand the base requirements for ecommerce success (and how the firms who have been successful got there so quickly)
  • Attendees will walk away with an understanding of how demographic change is changing how B2B customers buy and understand the importance of self-discovery online
  • Attendees will understand the drivers Amazon’s success in B2B
  • Attendees will have a sense of what challenges Amazon still faces in B2B and what they can do to not only compete but to out-disrupt the disruptors online
  • Attendees will come away with ideas on how to leverage their existing sales teams to create competitive advantage in ecommerce using strategies like content marketing, product UX design, and personalization

Closing Session & Discussion

“Talent Management – Transitioning to an IT Talent Acquisition Model to Evolve the Organization”

Many billion dollar distributors confuse talent acquisition with recruitment. Talent acquisition at its best is a strategic approach to identifying, attracting, engaging and onboarding the right talent for the right roles at the right time. It is a strategic business function that proactively fulfills organizational outcomes. To transform talent acquisition, billion dollar CIOs must take the function from one that is reactive and transactional, to one that is proactive and strategic. It is about transforming and connecting talent acquisition practices to organizational outcomes which requires different processes, activities and capabilities. The first step is recognizing that they need to go beyond recruiting and implement a talent acquisition engine. The next step is understanding the elements of talent acquisition and having the advisory capability to build the engine in-house and execute it well.

Takeaway(s)
The attendees to this session will leave with the following takeaways:

  • Understand the difference between talent acquisition and recruiting.
  • What are the drivers for building a talent acquisition strategy and how to implement this strategy.
  • In the age of constant technology change, what companies are doing to attract top talent.
  • What are best practices for retaining top performers.
