Delivering for Best-in-Class Wholesaler-Distributors

Virtual Roundtable – November 5, 2020

Please contact Tara Mostatab at tmostatab@naw.org if you have any questions.

We are currently in the process of finalizing our virtual Fall 2020 program. Please check back for updates. Please contact Tara Mostatab at tmostatab@naw.org if you have any questions.

The NAW Large Company Operations Roundtable for direct members was created as a new mechanism for the Operations executive of large distribution enterprises to network with non-competing peers in multiple lines of trade on key operations issues.

This by invitation roundtable is composed of executives from large companies that meet in Chicago two times per year and is highly interactive. The annual fee is $1,500 per member, which covers meeting costs for two events in a twelve month cycle. Participants are expected to cover the cost of their hotel and travel. Once the annual fee is paid, there are no additional fees to attend the meetings, which will last one day beginning with a reception and dinner the evening before.

The participating companies can also name a senior level alternate who can take the place of the operations executive, should that person be unable to attend the scheduled meeting.

If you would like to learn more, please contact Tara Mostatab at 202.263.4080 or tmostatab@naw.org.

Eligibility: Companies with $100M to $1B annual revenue.
The NAW Large Company Roundtable is the only opportunity that provides networking and benchmarking exclusively with other top executives of non competing, like-sized Wholesale-Distribution companies.

NAW Government Relations Update

Jade West, Chief Government Relations Officer,  NAW

Voting in the critical 2020 national elections has concluded – even though we may not yet know who has won the White House or which party controls the U.S. Senate – and there is no end in sight to the global pandemic. Will Congress come together in a Lame Duck Session to finally pass much needed COVID relief legislation to help sustain the economic recovery . . . or will we see continued bitter partisanship and continued gridlock? How will the power centers in Washington shift if VP Biden is in the White House, and what does that mean for business? Jade West will try to interpret the election returns and share her insights and best guesses on what comes next.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jade West is the Chief Government Relations Officer for the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors. She also serves as Executive Director of the NAW Political Action Committee. Jade is the senior lobbyist for NAW, advocating the interests of the wholesale distribution industry in Washington both on Capitol Hill and in the regulatory agencies.

In addition, she is Executive Secretariat for the 1,000-member Tax Relief Coalition and the LIFO Coalition. Jade is a Steering Committee member of the Alliance for Tax Fairness and Growth, and she is on the Management Committee of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, which leads the opposition to organized labor’s effort to remove secret ballot elections from union certification elections and force employers into binding “interest arbitration” in negotiating contracts. Jade is also a Director of the Business Industry Political Action Committee and a Founder and Director of the trade association Get Out the Vote Best Practices Group, both working to maximize the turnout of pro-business voters in federal elections.

Before joining NAW in 2002, Jade was a senior aide on Capitol Hill for more than 20 years.

The Covid-19 impact on the Trucking and LTL industry and how to prepare for 2021

Jack Holmes, Chairman, Emerge

Jake Papa, SVP of Enterprise Sales, Emerge

Demand is simply outpacing capacity right now and there is no clear path to that changing any time soon. Carriers are exercising their options more than ever in search for the highest paying load resulting in three out of every four tenders being rejected. Declining service due to last minute tender acceptance coupled with shippers’ choice between playing the volatile spot market and locking in high contract rates raise important questions for shippers heading into 2021.

Key Takeaways:

  • Minimizing exposure to rate increases
  • Finding capacity & reducing tender rejections
  • 2021 procurement & budgeting

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jack Holmes‘ career in transportation began in 1979 when he joined UPS as a package handler. From there, he continued to excel in the company and eventually served as President and Chief Operating Officer of numerous UPS locations before helping lead their largest-ever domestic acquisition, Overnite and Motor Cargo, now called UPS Freight. Beginning in 2006, he served as President and CEO of UPS Freight, one of the largest LTL carriers in the U.S. and a leading provider in truckload services, until his retirement in 2016.

Jack was appointed by Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, as Co-Chairman of the National Freight Advisory Council in Washington DC. He was subsequently reappointed by Secretary of Transportation. Anthony Fox.

Jack also serves on the Board of Directors for Werner Enterprises, Redwood Logistics, LaserShip and LinkLabs.

Jack, his wife Michelle and 3 of their 8 children reside in Richmond, VA and are involved in many charitable activities.

Jake Papa, a founding member of Emerge, has excelled in multiple roles within the logistics industry including Strategic Partnerships, Technology Integrations, Market Analytics, and Enterprise Sales. Previous to Emerge Jake’s career started with industry leaders including GlobalTranz and 10-4 Systems (now owned by Trimble). Originally from St. Louis, MO, Jake has lived in Phoenix, AZ for 15 years and has his B.S. from Arizona State University.

AI and Robotics in the Warehouse

Jon Schechter, Business Development Manager, AutoStore

Why robots are ready now, just not the humanoid ones you are envisioning

Thousands of robots now roam modern factories and warehouses, in addition to the thousands bolted to manufacturing lines. Robots can now carry goods safely, reliably, and effectively to relieve humans from mundane storing, moving, and sorting. AI is poised to create more interaction with robots and a wide variety of shapes, but for now they are still limited to standard form factors (ie. Pallet, totes, boxes).

Key Takeaways:

  • A brief history of robots: 6-axis, AGV’s, AMR’s, ASRS, etc
  • Helping a robot to see and why not touching anything is easier than grasping
  • A few examples of what is possible now for distributors

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jon Schechter started with AutoStore in 2020 and is responsible for driving market awareness focused on healthcare. He partners with customers in their fulfillment journey to identify whether AutoStore is right for them.

Jon has been designing fulfillment centers with nearly 100k robots since 2008 with prior experience with Kiva Systems, Amazon, and RightHand Robotics. Jon studied Mechanical Engineering at MIT and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. In addition to robots, Jon likes precision cooking and chasing a white ball around grass with sticks.
