The distribution landscape is changing fast. Former customers are now becoming competitors – for example, many large logistic players now list Amazon as direct competition. Distributors in many sectors are looking to create stronger business models by capturing more of the value-add in their respective markets – for example building new services and capabilities to streamline the delivery of value added services between customers and suppliers. Many distributors are leveraging data and analytics in new ways to enable this. To succeed in this rapidly shifting environment, these distributors are looking to upgrade their business model, or build entirely new models.

Distributors also often ask ‘how much innovation can I support?’ or ‘how do I innovate effectively and on limited budgets’.

This panel discussion will feature executives from a range of fields to share perspectives and learnings as their businesses have changed, examine the impacts of technology and customer and market shifts impacting distribution, explore implications for the business model choices that distributors are making to make their business more relevant and expand their role in value chains in which they participate.

Specific topics covered:

  • Concept of an ‘innovation capability’: how can leaders reimagine the role of a distributor under changing market landscapes, and be more successful incubating and developing new models
  • Examples and case studies from cross-industry leaders as well as within distribution
  • Considerations and trade-offs for distributors on how to make innovation successful and drive the bottom line

SPEAKERS

Karim Pourak, a serial entrepreneur, is the co-founder and CEO of ProcessMiner, a Cloud based Root Cause and Predictive analysis system. At ProcessMiner, Karim has helped numerous organizations gain in-depth insight into operating processes as well as providing actionable root cause analysis and prediction of events that can negatively impact production output, utilizing most advanced data analytics and machine learning science and methodologies to deliver a unique and one of a kind experience to the manufacturing market. Prior to ProcessMiner, Karim served as the Solution Architect and CEO for ParaSoft, a consulting firm focused on process automation and business analysis.

Rick Chavez, a partner at Oliver Wyman, is an innovator with two decades’ experience at the forefront of the digital revolution. His experience spans a wide range of organizations – from pure start-up ventures through to $80 BN global corporations – as senior executive, advisor and Board member. Some of his current clients are potential disruptors grappling with rapid growth; others are incumbents mounting their own defensive, transformational initiatives to ward off threats from disruptors. Over the last ~25 years he has guided growth and innovation strategies and programs at companies that include Adobe, American Express, D&B, Fox Home Entertainment, Kinko’s (now part of FedEx), Microsoft, University of Michigan, WalMart, and Yahoo! Rick’s most recent operating role was with Microsoft, where he served as Chief Solutions Officer for Microsoft Advertising and Consumer Monetization, General Manager of Marketing Solutions, and founder of Microsoft’s Solution Studio415. He built and led an inter-discipline team of designers, analysts, consumer researchers, and software wizards to co-innovate marketing solutions with global corporations, drawing from Microsoft’s portfolio of consumer, internet, and enterprise assets. Prior to Microsoft, Rick was a managing director with TCG Advisors, a boutique strategy and transformation firm based in Silicon Valley and founded by Geoffrey Moore.

Varun Ratta is a Partner at Oliver Wyman, and leads our work in the Chemicals sector. He has 20 years of experience in the industry and has driven global transformation efforts with several leading diversified chemical companies. His expertise lies in unlocking business value by improving commercial capabilities including pricing, sales effectiveness and marketing. He has helped clients drive profitable growth by developing growth strategies that take into account sectoral supply/demand balances, competitive strategies and external value chain forces. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman, Varun was the SVP of Product and Pricing Management of  Solenis, a PE owned specialty chemical company.  In his role he drove the company’s transformation around pricing and profitability by developing and successfully executing sector specific commercial strategies.

Sam Rosenberg is a partner in the Oliver Wyman New York office with over 14 years of experience. Sam focuses on helping companies transform their commercial organizations, including topics of market strategy, offer, pricing and sales. He is also a member of Oliver Wyman Digital, Technology and Analytics practice, where he has helped numerous companies achieve commercial transformation through improved process, tools, and analytics. Mr. Rosenberg has authored recent reports on The Intelligent Distributor, and Incremental Change is Not Enough and The Salesforce Paradox. Mr. Rosenberg graduated cum laude from Princeton University, where he focused on operations research, finance, and computer science

NAW Government Relations Update

Jade West

Chief Government Relations Officer, NAW

For over 20 years, Jade West was a staple in the U.S. Senate. For the past 10 years, Jade has helped educate lawmakers on how certain legislative policies could impact true economic engines such as wholesaler-distributors. From stopping the repeal of LIFO, to tax and labor initiatives, Jade has been out front and leading the charge on Capitol Hill to benefit the entire $5.7 trillion industry that is wholesale distribution.

SPEAKER

Jade West is the Chief Government Relations Officer for the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors. She also serves as Executive Director of the NAW Political Action Committee. Jade is the senior lobbyist for NAW, advocating the interests of the wholesale distribution industry in Washington both on Capitol Hill and in the regulatory agencies.

In addition, she is Executive Secretariat for the 1,000-member Tax Relief Coalition and the LIFO Coalition. Jade is a Steering Committee member of the Alliance for Tax Fairness and Growth, and she is on the Management Committee of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, which leads the opposition to organized labor’s effort to remove secret ballot elections from union certification elections and force employers into binding “interest arbitration” in negotiating contracts. Jade is also a Director of the Business Industry Political Action Committee and a Founder and Director of the trade association Get Out the Vote Best Practices Group, both working to maximize the turnout of pro-business voters in federal elections.

Before joining NAW in 2002, Jade was a senior aide on Capitol Hill for more than 20 years.

As a result, innovations stay close to the vest and are designed more as extensions of current offerings and capabilities and rather than game-changing or market-leading solutions. In this session, our panel will discuss their experiences and plans around leveraging best-in-class help for innovations. We will share business innovations identified in our research through brainstorming and scenario planning, and explore how distributor build an innovation ecosystem for optimizing results. SPEAKERS

Benj Cohen founded Proton.ai to deliver cutting-edge technology to distributors. Benj learned about distribution firsthand at Benco Dental, a business originally started by his great grandfather. While Benj was at Harvard University studying Applied Math and Data Science, he saw an opportunity to replace outdated technology to give his family business a competitive advantage. He then developed Proton.ai to give distributors the technology they need to thrive in a modern market.

With more than 35 years of experience in food distribution, Eric leverages his operational and leadership expertise to drive continued, profitable growth in the Dawn Bakery Distribution business. Passionate about delivering positive customer journeys, he focuses on putting the customer experience at the forefront of distribution. He is excited about the continued evolution the bakery industry is experiencing and the broad availability of baked goods in the marketplace. He is committed to positioning Dawn to serve the bakery market, in all its global channels — new and old. From his roots leading his family’s distribution business in New Jersey, he has been with Dawn since 1990. Eric enjoys spending time with his wife and family. They have two grown sons.
