A Brief History of Annapolis

Annapolis became the capital of Maryland in 1695, and the State House doubled as the nation's capital from 1783 to 1784. It was in the Old Senate Chamber that George Washington stepped down as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army before assuming the presidency. The Maryland State House is the oldest state capital in continuous legislative use in the United States.

In addition to the State House, you will find many houses and buildings that are more than two hundred years old. In fact, there are more surviving colonial buildings in Annapolis than anywhere else in the country!

St. John's College, the third oldest college in the country, ws founded in 1696 and was attended by Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner.
