General Session - "Think You Know Your Association’s Competitive Advantage? THINK AGAIN!"

Jaynie Smith
Founder and CEO, Smart Advantage, Inc.

Very few association executives can clearly and compellingly articulate their associations’ competitive advantages. Not understanding and not acting upon competitive advantages can lead prospective member companies to not join an association…or to join a competitor.

According to today’s session leader, Jaynie Smith, most associations suffer from at least one of these fatal flaws:

  • The association doesn’t have a competitive advantage, but thinks it does.
  • The association has a competitive advantage, but doesn’t know what it is.
  • The association knows what its competitive advantage is, but neglects to tell its members.
  • The association mistakes “strengths” for “competitive advantages.”
  • The association doesn’t concentrate on competitive advantages when making strategic and/or operational decisions.

The good news is that an association can overcome all of the above costly mistakes by identifying what sets the association apart in the marketplace and using its competitive advantages to its benefit. And that is what this NAW AEC session is all about.

Jaynie Smith is Founder and CEO of Smart Advantage, Inc., a marketing/management consultancy whose clients include companies and associations. Her company has taught association executives in many industries how to uncover and use their competitive advantages. Her belief is that once an association executive can answer the question, “What is our organization’s number one competitive advantage?,” he or she can begin to effectively market and sell a truly significant value proposition to the membership.

"Breakfast and NAW Government Relations Briefing"

Jade West
Senior Vice President-Government Relations, NAW

Jade West is NAW Senior Vice President-Government Relations. She also serves as Executive Director of the Wholesaler-Distributor Political Action Committee. Jade is the senior lobbyist for NAW, advocating the interests of the wholesale distribution industry in Washington both on Capitol Hill and with executive branch departments and agencies. In addition, she is Executive Secretariat of the 1,000-member Tax Relief Coalition, of the Coalition for Affordable American Energy and of the LIFO Coalition; a Steering Committee member of the Alliance for Tax Fairness and Growth; and on the Management Committee of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW), which leads the opposition to organized labor’s effort to remove secret ballot elections from union certification elections and force employers into binding “interest arbitration” in negotiating contracts. Jade is also a Director of the Business Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC) and a Founder and Director of the trade association Get Out the Vote Best Practices Group, both working to maximize the turnout of pro-business voters in Federal elections.

General Session - "Race for Relevance: 5 Radical Changes for Associations (Part 1)"

Harrison Coerver
President, Harrison Coerver & Associates

Significant and permanent changes in the environment for associations have occurred over the last several decades. One thing hasn’t changed much, however, and that is the way associations operate. They govern the same way. They deliver the same services. They communicate the same way. Yet most have experienced tremendous changes in their markets, members, and ability to compete in a rapidly changing world.

Harrison Coerver and Mary Byers, CAE, the authors of ASAE’s new book, Race for Relevance: 5 Radical Changes for Associations, will discuss their thought-provoking concepts that challenge conventional association wisdom and present revolutionary yet doable changes to the traditional association operating model. Harrison will present this morning’s session, and he will be joined by his associate, Mary Byers, for tomorrow’s concluding session.

Individually and as a team, they will make a strong case for the imperative of radical versus incremental change; propose fundamental, new approaches to association governance and management; and provide step-by-step implementation approaches and tools you can take home. Members of the NAW AEC will present case studies of their own journeys in these areas.

This in-depth, interactive session, over two days, will present innovative ways of thinking about how your distribution association is governed and managed so it maintains future vitality and relevance.

Program Objectives:

Objective 1: Encourage you to think differently about how you govern and manage your distribution association

Objective 2: Equip you with strategies and tools to undertake radical changes in the way you govern and manage

Objective 3: Present in-depth case studies on how other association executives effected these radical changes at their associations.

Harrison Coerver is no stranger to the NAW AEC, having presented innovative and challenging management concepts to the group many times through the years. He is President of Harrison Coerver & Associates, a management consulting firm specializing in strategy and planning for trade associations. In the last 25 years, he has consulted with more than 1,200 associations in strategy, planning, governance, and management.

Note: Attendance at this session earns two points toward ASAE CAE certification or recertification.

1:30 PM - 4:45 PM

AEC Hershey Tour (optional)

Our AEC Hershey Tour will depart from the front entrance of The Hotel Hershey® promptly at 1:30 pm. You'll be transported on the Hershey Trolley Works for a memorable journey through the town "built on chocolate." The trolley conductor will entertain and inform you…and share some chocolate treats!

We'll stop at Founders Hall for a private NAW AEC tour of this inspiring monument to the vision of Milton S. Hershey. The Hershey School began as Milton and Kitty Hershey's dream. Unable to have children of their own, the Hersheys decided to use their wealth to create a home and a school for orphaned boys. Thus was established the Milton Hershey School in 1909. This private tour will teach you the fascinating story behind the school, as well as give you a glimpse into the daily life of its students.

Following our Founders Hall tour, we'll move on to The Hershey Story, the museum on Chocolate Avenue. You'll journey through Milton Hershey's lifetime and beyond, a tale spanning more than 150 years of trials and triumphs, philanthropic endeavors, and one man's unwavering confidence. From Hershey’s earliest entrepreneurial ventures, to his visions of a town built around the attributes of the humble cacao bean, The Hershey Story is an uplifting celebration of the great American Dream.

Our visit to The Hershey Story encompasses a spectacular, interactive mini-theater experience that combines a multimedia experience with artifacts and images. You'll explore the town's history, growth, and people. Exhibits trace Hershey's lavish architecture (much of it inspired by Milton and Kitty Hershey's travels abroad), as well as the Hershey mansion and life in the factory.

Finally, the Hershey Trolley Works will return you to our home base, The Hotel Hershey®. You will now truly understand why this extraordinary Pennsylvania community is the "Sweetest Place on Earth."

6:00 PM - 9:45 PM

"A Good Ol’ Fashioned Pennsylvania Pig Roast"

Hosted by The Hotel Hershey®

Meet in the hotel lobby at 6:00 PM; Buses depart at 6:15 PM for the Hershey Country Club; Return at approximately 9:45 PM

After transferring to the beautiful Hershey Country Club, we’ll enjoy a relaxed evening of fun and NAW AEC fellowship. Tonight’s special treat, courtesy of The Hotel Hershey®, will be as authentic as it gets—a traditional Pennsylvania summer pig roast! And if that's not your desire, not a problem—we’ll have lots of other delectable dinner choices for you, including cooked-to-order steaks off the grill prepared just for you by the culinary team at Hershey Country Club.
