General Session - "Key Economic Indicators for Associations"

Alan Beaulieu
President, ITR Economics, and an NAW Senior Economic Advisor

Do your association’s key performance indicators—such as number of members, dues revenues, trade show revenues, etc.—have any connection to larger macroeconomic indicators—such as industrial production, housing starts, etc.? If so, what are these correlations, and by understanding them, can you predict how your association and its members will fare in the future? According to Alan Beaulieu, an NAW senior economic adviser, the answer is “YES.”

During this special AEC session, Alan will show you how big-picture economic trends relate to your own association’s economics. All attendees will receive a spreadsheet to track trends after the meeting.

NOTE: Attendance at this session earns one point toward ASAE CAE certification or recertification.

General Session - "Building Your Bench: Transforming Today’s Members into Tomorrow’s Volunteer Leaders"

Cynthia D’Amour
President, People Power Unlimited, LLC

When the present is consuming, filled with change and challenges, it can be hard to find time to look to the future. Are you aware how your association’s future leaders may be different from your current leaders? What does it take to engage your future members? How do you build the skills of your future leaders so they can successfully lead your association into tomorrow? Worry no more about these questions because Cynthia D’Amour will shed light on the answers to these questions and more.

In this interactive session, you will discuss future trends that may impact your volunteer leadership team, explore best practices for engaging future leaders, and analyze strategies to increase the effectiveness of your leadership development efforts. Come prepared to learn simple ideas you can implement right away.

General Session - "Association Leadership in a Turbulent Environment"

Seth Kahan
Principal, Visionary Leadership

Think of this two-hour presentation as an interactive think tank, combining leading-edge ideas presented by executive change expert Seth Kahan with in-depth audience discussion of those ideas. You’ll hear and apply Seth’s framework for identifying and influencing trends that impact your members and your association’s bottom line. And you’ll assess your association’s need to successfully evolve and adapt to a challenging marketplace. In addition, Seth will provide lessons drawn from his extensive experience working with executives to lead change.

It’s a challenging time for associations for two powerful reasons: (1) the economic recovery is slow or nonexistent, and (2) member value is transforming along with disruptive technologies. These factors raise the provocative question: “Are associations even relevant today?” In this presentation, you’ll learn about current trends that impact association relevancy, and you’ll have a chance to work together on solutions using Seth as a resource.

NOTE: Attendance at this session earns two points toward ASAE CAE certification or recertification.

Our session will introduce a new approach to strategic planning and give you valuable facilitation tools you can use with your own Board and Executive Committee in implementing the strategic thinking process.

Led by Duquesne’s Michael Kumer, you’ll learn the Board’s number-one leadership responsibility…understanding all about Vision, Mission, and Values statements…how a sound strategic plan can lead to increased association relevancy…how to update the association’s strategic plan…how you can lead the fine art of “Board Brainstorming,” and more.
