NAW Association Executives Council (AEC) Meeting

Agenda

July 7th, 2008
Day 1
12:00 PM

For Early Arrivals - "Afternoon at Leisure"

2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Optional Business Session - "Current Trends in Association Executive Compensation"

Peter Kennedy
PRM Consulting Group

The NAW AEC Summer 2008 meeting kicks off with this close up look at association executive compensation issues. We’ll examine the entire range of salary and benefit options, based on an in-depth survey of AEC compensation conducted especially for this meeting.

Although it has been shown repeatedly that people do not work just for money, executives and key staff alike need to feel that the association has competitive and equitable pay practices, with total compensation systems reflective of the economic realities of the time and place in which they work, where pay and benefits bear some relation to what others get paid for similar work in similar organizations.

Compensation expert Peter Kennedy will invite association executive discussion on the following topics:

  • A total compensation framework
  • Rewards that go beyond cash or cash equivalent benefits
  • Pay markets as a strategic concept
  • Using pay to protect the organization’s financial health
  • Typical sources of market pay data
  • Selecting relevant statistics
  • Aggregating and evaluating market data (with relevant examples)
  • Using market data to develop internal pay practices
  • Market adjustments to the pay program over time
  • Trends in executive compensation.

Peter Kennedy is a founding Principal of the PRM Consulting Group, Washington, DC. He works with clients in the not-for-profit, private, and public sectors to develop and implement effective total compensation strategies. He has worked in a consulting capacity for most of his 28 years in business, with several years spent as a manager of benefit consulting and outsourcing operations.

Note: Attendance at this session earns two points toward ASAE CAE certification or recertification.

"The Impact of the November Elections on Business"

Jade West
Senior Vice President-Government Relations, NAW

So will it be President McCain or Obama? And who will wield the Majority gavels in the House and Senate?

Though it's too early to know—and will still be too early in July at the AEC meeting—it’s incumbent on associations and their members to know what's at stake in the November elections. Where do the candidates stand on the key issues that affect us and our members? What can we expect from each of the presidential candidates on labor issues…..workplace regulations…..taxes and fiscal policy? Just as important, what can you and your members be doing to get engaged in the process and ensure your voice in the outcomes?

NAW's Jade West will walk you through the issues that promise (or threaten….) to impact your members' businesses, and tell you how you can get engaged and have an impact.

She was decommissioned for the last time in San Diego in 1992.

Our special NAW tour will be led by Scott McGaugh, author of Midway Magic. For the past eight years, Scott has played an active role in the campaign to bring the USS Midway to San Diego as a permanent museum, visitor attraction and education center.

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

General Session - "Peer-to-Peer: Association Challenges and Solutions"

Moderated by Bob Harris, Harris Management Group, Inc.

What is the biggest challenge facing your association in the next 1-3 years? And what specific actions—if any—are you and your management team taking to deal with this challenge?

Those two pivotal questions are at the heart of today's AEC peer-to-peer session. Each association executive in attendance will be asked to address these questions in rapid-fire fashion, followed by audience discussion to refine proposed solutions and create new ones.

The power of group consultation promises to make this one of the most compelling sessions of the AEC meeting. Our goal: to put some fresh ideas on your plate, and to send you home with an enhanced capacity for addressing your biggest association challenge.

Bob Harris, Harris Management Group, Inc., will moderate this session prior to presenting his “Association Self-Audit” (see below).

Note: Attendance at this session earns one point toward ASAE CAE certification or recertification.

General Session - "The Association Self-Audit"

Bob Harris
Harris Management Group, Inc.

Changes in member loyalty, service delivery expectations, overhead costs, and competition require associations to perform more efficiently than ever before. In part as a result of these pressures, associations are being challenged to reduce costs and waste, avoid losses, increase member confidence, leadership involvement, and staff productivity.

Bob Harris will help you achieve more in all of these critical areas by showing you how to implement the association self-audit, an internal management tool for you and your association staff. You’ll learn to streamline association operations by developing key manuals, including leadership orientation; policies and procedures; personnel; accounting; and best practices.

Bob Harris has 20 years’ experience working with associations. He is the author of Association Management 101 Online© and creator of the Association Self-Auditing Process©.

General Session - "Is Green Growing on Your Members?"

Alyson Austin
Senior Content Leader, Leadership Outfitters, Inc.

It isn’t easy being green—but more and more of your members may find it to be profitable—if they do it right.

How will the burgeoning green movement impact your members in the coming years? And what will be your association leadership responsibilities in an increasingly green business environment? How can you “lead by example” and offer environmentally-friendly options for your employees and members? These and other timely questions will be asked and answered at today’s session.

Alyson Austin, Senior Content Leader, brings front-line association management leadership and small business consulting expertise to Leadership Outfitters, Inc. She has worked for some of the largest and most influential associations in the country. Before joining the Leadership Outfitters team, Alyson was Vice President of Member Services for the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIA/SC) overseeing non-dues revenue, membership development, education, and trade show operations. She has also worked in senior positions for Club Managers Association of America (CMAA); National Association of Home Builders (NAHB); and the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona. She is an active volunteer for the California Society of Association Executives (CalSAE) and is a visiting instructor at the University of California, Irvine.
